Finding the Beauty

Writer: AimeeAimee

My family was busy eating cheese and not knowing what day it was for the duration of the week between Christmas and New Years. I also had no idea what day it was, but I did know that it was unseasonably warm for late December. I was not about to let the opportunity to get some fresh air pass me by, so the dog and I loaded up and headed to our closest hiking trail. This particular trail had a whopping 350 ft of elevataion change. This is Nebraska...

Anyhoo, we headed out and merrily walked along until the trail abruptly ended. I checked my AllTrails app and discovered that we were about 1/2 mile past the turnoff for the main part of the trail. We were so happy to be out in nature that we had neglected to pay attention to the intended path.

Evidence of our backtracking...

As we turned around and headed back, I got to thinking about all of the beautiful things that we saw and experienced while we went the wrong way. Things that we would have missed if we had stayed on course. I realized that this would be a very helpful persective to have when assessing my journey through life. Instead of regret and wishing I had done things differently along the way, I should really focus on the beautiful things I experienced while I was off track. And so began an new endeavor...

There is beauty to be found even when we are off track.

I am focusing on mindset this year, specifically hoping to establish some new neural connections to allow me to reframe the lens through which I view things. I have been practicing finding the beauty in things that I would normally find distasteful. I discovered that rainy, foggy days possess a sense of mystery and quiet beauty hidden in the mist. Dishes left on the counter made me smile knowing that my son is home from abroad. The dust in the air is so sparkly and beautiful when the sun hits it just right in the late afternoon - chores be damned!

I hope you will consider joining me in my pursuit to find and acknowledge the beauty that is all around us, all the time. Berkeley is on board - woof!
